When it
comes to declutter our homes, we tend to cringe at the
thought of the efforts and exertion that would be caused while
doing it. Just yesterday I decided to declutter my study
room entirely, after a lot of procrastination. Trust me,
it's not as simple as it sounds. I think it requires more mental
brain-storming to clear up your space than physical strength
to make room for something new and significant.
Here's
why:
a)
While you declutter any area of your home, you need to be very sure
of the things you need and things you don't. You need to make a
map and decide where to begin re-organizing your house. We always
tend to hang on to certain things just in case we might need them later.
But the truth is, those articles are only touched by dust and not our
hands for further use. It’s only better that we bid adieu to them
respectfully.
b) Another
reason why you need brain-storming is because you might stumble upon
things reminiscent of your past to transport you back to long
forgotten days. Sometimes, the memories remind you of certain
setbacks, hurts and regrets which were better left behind. We need to
be strong while going through them without brushing those wounds
ruthlessly. So its better to get rid of them forever.
Now I'd
like to talk about why its important to declutter and its benefits.
You
know, there are lot of reasons why you need to evacuate all those
belongings you hold closer to your chest, but never really look back
to check if they still exist within the same confines of your home
once you put them back. Here's why you should take the plunge:
1)
Don't you like your home to look a bit more organized and civilized,
for a change? I'm sure your folks would still recognize you if you
tidy and tack up the space you proudly call your own. First reason is
simply because cleaning up your home will beautify and renovate your space.
Consequentially, it uplifts your senses totally leaving you feel
refreshed and positive all day long. The best part is it helps you
concentrate better.
2)Let's
accept it, unless we let go of our past, we can't really move
forward. We need our past to learn lessons from but not so much lest
it overpowers our present and future. We don't need those
articles, equipment, materials and memories which are no longer
serving us. Just making us feel guilty for the lack of time or energy
to use them again.
For e.g
You always tugged that favorite pair of jeans to your heart that
earned you many compliments just so some day you'll lose those 20
pounds(or more?) to fit them into again?
Truth
is your lifestyle doesn't allow much strength or couple of hours to
get back in shape.
3)
Imagine an absolutely spacious, fragrant, spick and span home that
spells discipline, elegance and perfect balance in semblance of the
proud inhabitant? They say, the home speaks volumes of its owner and
his personality. Make sure you're sending the appropriate signs of
being a sophisticated person who manages his household responsibly as
much as his profession. And yes, don't mind my usage of 'his'
concerning
household
because its not only a woman's duty to take care of your house but a
man's duty too.
4)
Decluttering your home is synonymous with decluttering your life.
excuse me for the redundancy. However, this is the best way to teach
you to eliminate those bad habits, toxic people, negative memories
that hurt, tear you apart, destroy your happiness. Yes, there are
things we are emotionally attached to like photographs, maybe
slam-books, invitation cards, clothes etc that remind us of those
golden memories of the past. Consider this: Are they adding quality
to your life right now? Does it serve your purpose of a fulfilling
life? It just makes you cry. It just takes you back to a bundle of
questions like - 'what if, why me, why didn't I, what was I thinking,
why did
i do this?' Adding fuel to fire which is about to blow and erupt
volcanic lava is dangerous if you're prone to getting burnt and I'm
sure you don't want to damage yourself. Once you collect the trash
into a carton and give it away. You'd feel much happier, very relaxed
and super confident like never before. Try it!
Let go of the past
where it belongs - in the past! Keep happy memories with you. All
those nostalgic moments remind you of a lovely person you were, even
if a little stupid, silly, embarrassing but honest, caring and pure.
These are the necessary virtues for humanity. I hope you get the
required motivation to clear unnecessary clutter from your home and
life, step by step. It is time you roll up your sleeves and get to
work. The powerful feelings of accomplishment and mastery you get
after this activity, are truly phenomenal.
P.S. Please feel
free to share your declutter anecdotes with me :)
